I may be on the verge of a radical dependence on coffee. Getting up before 5:30 is killer. Especially killer on days when I know it will be 10pm or so before I'm home again. Trying to hold out until after lunch to get coffee -- I'm sure tomorrow is going to be a two coffee day though. (A shortened sleep tonight thanks to getting home late from class coupled with tomorrow evening's class will make it just short of a necessity!)

I find that a little ridiculous.
As of late I'm:
Living in a wonderful new apartment in Old Town with Tom.
Currently back at the American Veterans Center (where they've maybe given me a little too much responsibility with the National Memorial Day Parade).
Starting work at OIG within DHS a week after my birthday in June.
Struggling to finish my first year in grad school.
Preparing to go part-time to class in the fall while working full-time.
Planning two little trips: one to ATL to visit the family around my birthday and one to Jersey (??) with Tom for a little beach get away.

Something that is rare for me. I exist in a state of simple shock and disbelief.

I don't know how things like this happen.

She was a friend at UGA. Not extremely close -- but we celebrated New Years 2006 together, hung out a few times and saw Nickel Creek together.

Meredith was simply one of the most resourceful, most athletic and smartest women I know. If this happened to her, what's to keep it from happening to any of us?

I'm slightly ashamed to say that I'm terrified. That I haven't left the house today and that it fills me with anxiety.

I grieve for her and I am beside myself thinking of her family. I pray that God gives them strength.

Killing time here in my final hour at work today. This little temp position hasn't really brought anything new into my life (I already know how to use Excel, perform quality customer service and use a tape gun) however I have learned how to extend the "time" it takes me to do any slightly difficult task. Rather, I do parts of it very quickly and then take twenty minute breaks to play on the internet or ponder life. Then back to work. Apparently they are still amazed at the rate of productivity I am capable of (even with this built in lag time) so there's no real reason change anything I'm doing.

I'm happy and appreciative to work in a nice environment with wonderful women. This job helps me pay my bills, so I am definitely grateful. However, the hour commute (each way), having to work a day every weekend and the small pay grates on me. The weekend thing especially! When I was hired, I said I could work one or two weekend days a month if I was given advanced notice. We do make the schedule for the month at the beginning of the month, so I have plenty of notice. But I didn't want to work EVERY weekend. That's my time away from work and school and to spend relaxing or with Tom or catching up with other friends. When I brought this up to my boss she gave me some guilt trip like -- well it's only the four of us and I'm not supposed to work weekends since I already work 40+ hours during the week and the owner doesn't want to work weekends.

I mean, maybe hire another person or two? Cause what are you planning on doing when I leave at the end of February? Thankfully, they placed a Craig's List ad about part-time weekend and evening shifts and got a great response. Interviews are on Wednesday and I'm hoping that I won't have to work every weekend in February.

In fact, I know I will not be working every weekend. I plan on asking off (as of tomorrow when I have solid plans and reservations!) for the weekend after Valentine's Day. Tom and I have our six month anniversary two days before V-day and that weekend is a three day weekend thanks to President's Day on Monday. So, I'm asking off Friday-Monday and he's going to take a half day Friday. We're going to rent a cabin in the Shenandoah Valley and spend a little weekend out in the mountains. So excited! I'll only be a month or so into school, so it won't be too intense yet and with a month's notice I'd better be able to get the weekend off. We'd be back Sunday night, but I just don't want to do anything on Monday. Lazy, I know, but the first half of the semester is gonna be a little intense as far as my schedule goes.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I have class; Tuesday is a day class, but Monday and Wednesday are night classes. Then, Thursday and Friday I work 12-8 out here and probably 10-4 one day each weekend. That pretty much leaves me with Tuesday night and one weekend day to myself each month to hang out with people. Nuts. Whatever, I'll make it work but maybe not it makes a little more sense as to why I don't really relish in the idea of having to work on a Monday when I have school off.

All right, time to put in a few minutes more work before I head out for the evening. Tom and I are making lasagna, I'm pretty pumped.

Even though I really didn't get out of my PJs today, there was much productivity! The rest of the night is devoted to: my paper journal, reading The Economist and reading my fun book. Tomorrow ushers in my return to my part time job. Nothing strenuous, just brings me home later than I'd like. It'll be fun to catch up with Lal and Elizabeth after winter break and to see if they've had any luck hiring new folks (which means I might have a full weekend off once in a while).

My mind is buzzing with things to do -- I blame the start of the new year and the new semester coming up. I've ordered the books for my policy econ class. Perhaps early next week I'll pop onto campus and see how many more of my books I can afford to buy/am able to carry home. And, as soon as my loans come through for this semester, I can evaluate my financial situation and figure out how much (if any) money I need to take out in personal loans to make it through the summer until my next set of loans comes through in September. (Not thinking about this until I have to...)

Delightful Christmas in Georgia with the family and time with many friends. Sadly, I didn't get to see nearly as many people as I wanted to. Anyone reading this -- if you're interested in a trip to DC, I'd love to see you.  For the first time, my Christmas list was fully functional. And bless my family, they came through. I have a wonderful new bathrobe (that absorbs water, unlike my previous one), snow boots, a new pair of running shoes, dress socks, a new camera, giftcards for restaurants, giftcards for books, a new printer and a few other things. I couldn't believe how amazing it was to not have to spend money and to have things I need. Perhaps I've finally figured out what it is to be grateful?

More big plans as the semester approaches. I refuse to fall behind this semester. My schedule (between work and school) is rather hectic and I won't have as much time to play catch up. I also need to make sure I keep my  GPA up once again so I can pass my fellowship deadlines and keep the scholarship money coming.

I apologize for the mundane and boring post, it's just stuff pacing around in my head.

What changes do you hope to see in yourself, or your lifestyle, at the end of your 1001 days?
If everything goes according to plan, I'll be healthier, more "grown-up," and living a more balanced life.

Which three items on your list will be most challenging to achieve?

Number 11 -- Every time I visit the dentist they tell me to floss more. I just forget or don't want to, but it's a change I need to make.
Number 43 -- Something I've wanted to do forever. I just need to make the time for it.
Number 55 -- Grad school is costing me quite a bit of money. Just thinking about paying it off makes me a little weak in the knees. But, I can't wait to start because the sooner I do, the sooner it's in the past.

Do you have skills, expertise or knowledge that might help other members to achieve their goals? What are they?
I love words, so I can edit fairly well (both academic and creative). I also love to give (and get) support.

i've realized something lately. i'm so used to taking care of myself that it's entirely surprising (and utterly wonderful) that there's someone else that wants to take care of me too. and it's beyond words.

additionally, i now have someone to take care of too. it's really nice to have someone to plan nice things for again. and to have someone to worry about.

in other news, night out with the old boss and some of the staff from the hill. i maybe had a few too many margaritas. whoops!

tomorrow will be excellent: some productivity in the morning, football all afternoon and a birthday party for one of my classmates at hawk and dove (a pretty sweet hill bar, even if it is swarming with military boys).

five days! (i guess it's four now since it's after midnight...)

There's a woman I work with, thankfully she works out of her place in Minnesota and I don't actually have to deal with her, that's making me CRAZY.

She doesn't seem to understand the simplest things I email her (even when they're explained explicitly) and she questions everything I do. I kinda want to start answering "cause Tim (my boss) said so." *growl*

I'm officially free of the old leaky apartment. I've been in my new place for about two weeks. I finally finished unpacking/setting up a few nights ago. Now I just need some stuff for my walls and maybe a little dinner table. We'll see how that works out.

Tom is moving up in six (six!!!) days. His apartment has bay windows -- this excites me. :D I also really cannot wait to have him up here and around more often. I think it'll be a very nice change in the life of Anna. As I've learned in the past, distance relationships and I don't mix. I'll gladly handle the next six days though. It's going to be excellent, I'm not sure if I even have words for it.

Apparently a horde of UGA folks are making plans to come out and visit and I've talked to Sydney Bay about bringing some tip kids up sometime soon. I am lucky that I have so many people to love in my life. <3

I suppose I should probably get back to work since that's what I'm here for and what I'm getting paid (no matter how pitifully) to do.

so, in talking with my mother tonight, apparently she's putting everything in my old room at home in garbage bags.

back story: at the beginning of the summer she told me that before i moved out i needed to clean out my room because she was probably going to start using it as an office. when i came home from tip she told me it was less likely that she was going to work from home, but she still wanted it cleaned out.

i probably didn't do as much as i should have, but i definitely cleaned it out. i boxed up books i didn't want, i filled at least half a dozen bags with clothes for give away. all the stuffed animals i'd sentimentally held on to since childhood -- either put on a shelf in the closet or put in a giveaway bag to be loved by another child.

what i left: three drawers of clothes i wanted to keep; a drawer filled with cards, notes and other little sentimental things; a few shelves of books, journals and creative writing portfolios.

she and i had a conversation the night before i left which started when she walked into my room and commented that i still had a lot of clothes in the room. i told her that i didn't know i was supposed to remove ALL traces of my life from the room -- otherwise i would have gotten a storage unit or something. i also said that i had gotten rid of everything i didn't want and that what was left in the room i wanted to keep.

apparently that doesn't mean very much. she told me that she had gone through "all the clothes i left in the drawers" (yeah, all three of them out of what, nine or ten?) and tossed all the "ratty ones" -- i suppose it never dawned on her that those were sorority pass downs or shirts i kept from when i was a kid or STILL AROUND FOR SOME REASON. she also started throwing out all the cards and notes and such that i've saved since the end of time.

i guess there was a miscommunication. she thought she told me to clear all my stuff out of the room. i thought i was supposed to pack what i wanted to take to dc, trash what i didn't need/want anymore and leave the rest in a far reduced capacity. so, what i left behind she took as fair game to trash.

yes, i'll admit i could have done a little more in "cleaning" the room (no, i didn't dust and no i didn't vacuum) but i had NO CLUE that she'd be throwing away the things i saved because i have a sentimental attachment to.

i miss the people in atlanta, but i almost don't want to go home for christmas. i'll have to sleep in the "guest" bedroom. if i want access to any of the clothes i left there, i'll have to dig through boxes in the basement (because that's where it is now). and i'll have to figure out what exactly she tossed. i guess i feel like someone, without permission, purged my childhood.

what sucks: a leak
what sucks even more: when your apartment complex does not list an emergency maintenance number.
looking on the bright side: at least said leak is over the tub.
more on the bright side of things: at least it's not a real emergency like a pipe bursting or anything.
those suckers better believe i'll be waiting outside the leasing office tomorrow morning -- they'll fix this AND give me an emergency number where i can reach someone if this (or something else) happens again.

RAWR.

in other news: ten hour work day today. yay money, but boo my feet. they feel bruised. the excellent side of that is that they redid the schedule and i don't work again until saturday. fantastic. so, i take care of business tomorrow (leak, groceries, cleaning), orient on weds and thurs, find my office on friday, work and watch football on saturday and then tom gets here on sunday. :D

proud note: classes haven't started, but i've actually been doing the "suggested reading" for my stat class. (he sent us an email with something about "if you need any beach reading, check out:...." which happens to be the assignments for the first week.) here we go grad school?
